Stragglers Accepted into 2021 Round Norfolk Relay

Posted by Simon Webb on 14 March 2021

The Stragglers have had our entry to the 2021 Round Norfolk Relay (RNR) accepted and are now keen to hear from you if you would like to be a part of the team. The race is scheduled to take place over the weekend of Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th September, making this our first opportunity for a post-lockdown club away trip.

RNR was for many years a fixture of the club calendar, we first took a team in 1990, and in our 40th year we’re excited to be returning. For some club nostalgia see the results archive.

The race is different from Green Belt and Welsh Castles as it is a continuous baton relay. 17 stages complete the 197 miles course, which hugs the county boundary from it’s start and finish point in King’s Lynn. By day runners follow the coast on a mixture of terrains. By night (the race takes place over approximately 24 hours) we head away from the coast on roads where runners are supported by cars. With a staggered start, as the night unfolds teams come together making this a thrilling part of the weekend. You can see details of each stage here.

Just as the running itself is varied, so too are the stage distances. 4 of the 17 are between 16 and 20 miles,  ideal for anyone preparing for an October/November marathon. 2 stages are around 5.5 miles and are suitable for anyone who may not have had the opportunity to join us at other relay weekends.

As well as 17 participants each team requires a couple of support cyclists who will accompany runners during daylight stages, and so the trip is for around 20 people.

This trip is in the early stage of planning with an itinerary and costs to be confirmed. At this point we’re keen to hear from you if you think you would be interested in taking part or have questions about how it works. This event is open to both first and second claim members.
