Stragglers Road Series 2017 Up and Running!

The Stragglers Road series for 2017 kicked off in fine style at the Ranelagh Half Marathon Sunday 30th April. The race also doubled as the Stragglers inaugural half-marathon championships as well as the Surrey County Championships.
40 Stragglers out of a field of 658 toed the start line on the Petersham Road in bright, if slightly breezy, conditions.
Having safely got across the start line (dodging the two cars that had somehow inadvertently got caught up in the race!) the race soon opened up into a highly competitive intra-club competition across all the age categories.
For the men the result was never in question with Chris Walmsley streaking away into an early Straggler lead and getting across the finish line in a very impressive 1:19:40. The second-placed man was men’s captain Malcolm Davies in 1:28:00 taking the club M50 award. In close pursuit was the senior men’s winner Tiago Ramos (1:30:49). The result of the morning though was for the M60 winner Club captain Phil Davies recording 1:36:42. This also scooped Phil the Surrey County Half Marathon Championship M60 award.
Not to be outdone, the ladies produced their own star performances. Pre-race favourite Liz Killip produced a very strong performance recording 1:30:57 and be the first Straggler lady over the line. Liz was closely pursued by another L55 Dee Smale who ran a very competitive 1:34:49, and scooped the Surrey County Championships L55 Gold medal. Liz achieved the highest overall age grading across all runners male and female (86.49%), and Dee achieved the 4th highest (82.96%); fantastic achievements.
Also going under 1:40 was club chair Carys Mills to win the club’s L45 award. Kate Suttle managed to duck under 1:43 to win the senior lady award with Alexandra Galloway recording 1:47:36 to win the L35 award.
Many of the participants then decided to repair to the Anglers pub to celebrate their achievements, staying on well into the afternoon!
