Strong Performance by Juniors at Surrey XC Relays
Posted by James Desmond on 30 October 2017
The Surrey Cross Country Relays (also know as the Bruce Judd Relays) take place in Guildford on final Saturday in October each year, and are the traditional season-opener at which clubs assess their relative strength. We had 13 Stragglers running, with all performing very well and it was brilliant to see the support that everyone was giving to their team mates.
The race format is teams of 3 running over a 2.5k undulating grass course that is very similar to the lap used for Guildford parkrun.
Headlines for me were:
- the super 5th place by the girls U13 team of Maisie, Gabbie and Harriet
- the tremendous run by Archie on his debut in yellow to run the 13th quickest by an U13 boy on the day (even more impressive when you appreciate that as a Year 6 boy up against the majority who are Year 7 & 8), with super backup by George & Ethan to secure 12th place team
- a very commendable 18th place finish in U13G by Poppy, Amber and Chloe who all ran very mature races
- Spencer recording a top 20 finish in the very competitive U15 boys (within 10secs of 8th place)
- Lucy & Fenella running strongly and would surely have brought a top 10 finish for the team if not for the unfortunate injury to Poppy Jensen (who has I think been the most dependable and consistent member of the group being ever-present at races over the past few years).
