Stragglers Overrun Sutton
Posted by Helen Davies on 9 May 2017
Sunday 7th May saw 60 Stragglers on the start line, in a record turnout at the Sutton Runners 10k race held in Nonsuch Park, Cheam. The Stragglers team made up over 13% of the entire field and out numbering by 3 to 1 the next best represented club.
The Stragglers were already buzzing from an energetic warm up led by Kev Best, even before the starters gun had gone. Once over the start line Stragglers men and ladies set off at rapid pace and opened up another very competitive race on the two lap circuit of the Park and surrounding roads cheered on by some raucous support. There were some brilliant performances across all age categories including two overall race category winners, Sue Hall, who won the race L45 award and Liz Killip, the L55 winner. The men fought a similarly close battle to ramp up the competition in the Stragglers Road Series competition with Ollie Garner just edging out Rob Wilcox in an exciting finish. As a bonus, a number of the team achieved personal bests on the rather hilly course. Following another structured warm down led by Mark Pattinson, many of the team headed to the Nonsuch Park Mansion café for a welcome post race caffeine and sugar rush!
In the summer road series age grading competition, Liz Killip further extended her lead in the ladies competition with a sizzling 87.65% score from the race, and a new leader emerged in the men’s competition, Malcolm Fletcher, with a very impressive 79.51% score on the day.
Results are now available on our website.
After two races the Surrey Road League tables are now available. The men are currently a creditable 8th out of 35 clubs taking part in the Surrey Road league and ahead of some very strong clubs, but it is the ladies who are once again grabbing the headlines currently 2nd in their league against early pace setters Ranelagh.
Lastly there are lots of photos taken on the day by Pam Whitter and also the official Sutton Runners photos to peruse with lots of Stragglers featured.
Look out for the next Stragmag, and a full race report from one of our half-marathon champions, Tiago Ramos.
